Beautiful stories. Beautiful narration
I guess I'm a bit of a late-comer; I didn't discover these books until I was an adult. I have since enjoyed them for years. Lewis is a master storyteller and has beautiful symbolism. As my eyes have gotten worse over time, I have been turning more and more to audiobooks. Some are better than others. These were magnificent. I have experienced a fair few at this point, do I can say that with some confidence. I loved the narrarion. Each book has a different performer. They all did a wonderful job. I was blown away by the quality, and I will enjoy listening to them over and over. They were well worth the cost to me. Beautifully done!
Great performances, nice box, very nice set.
Everybody knows about the books, so this is about the AUDIOBOOK CD SET. The Audiobook CD set is a great idea, and it was well executed, too! The box set comes with 7 cd folders, all made of paper. each cd folder holds 3~5 CDs depending on the book. They are all packaged very nicely and the CD's are very nice too. The first CD of each book has EXTRA FEATURES! They are accessible with a computer, and include illustrations(drawings) from the original books. As far as I can tell, the audiobook leaves NOTHING OUT from C.S. Lewis's text. Every reader is excellent. There is no background music or any other form of dramaticism besides the actor/reader's performance. Of course, the reader will read the dialogues imitating the voices. This really helps keep track of who's speaking, and the acting is all very good. It's humorous to listen to Michael York speaking as Lucy, but they switch back and forth so well that I did NOT find it distracting. In fact I thought it was a great performance. The only problem I had is the volume since I listened to the whole set in my car - if you don't have a very nice car, you'll have to crank up the volume a LOT to hear the voices. That's not because my car audio sucks, but because the highway road noise drowns out the audiobook. On certain books (I think it was the Last Battle) the reader sometimes whispers and uses a booming voice at other times. This WILL hurt your ears if you're listening with headphones or have the volume way up. HOWEVER, I can't imagine a better audiobook version. As far as I know, this set is the best READING of the books. There are other audiobooks which are NOT READINGS, BUT THIS SET IS AN ACTUAL READING. Each CD is read by a different narrator. People like Patrick Stewart, so you ARE getting your money's worth in terms of acting caliber. My favorite was Michael York. One of the actors had an annoying voice, but I forget which... In all, the entire set is 31 CD's holding 31 HOURS of material. Enjoy them!
I LOVE THIS AUDIO SERIES!
This is one of the best audio reads I have heard. Each full-length book is read by an outstanding British actor: Kenneth Branagh, Michael York, Alex Jennings, Lynn Redgrave, Derek Jacobi, Jeremy Northam, and Patrick Stewart. It's bedtime stories for adults, as well as children, as only C.S. Lewis and these most excellent actors can produce. There are no disappoints here. None.
This is a wonderful product!
In my opinion, this is a wonderful audio rendering of a set of classic books. The audio was clear. The disks worked in my CD player. The various narrators did a terrific job with bringing the characters to life! If you enjoy The Chronicles of Narnia, this is an excellent audio version that I feel confident in recommending. I believe this product is excellent!
Wonderfully read and very enjoyable
Love this series!! I had looked everywhere for these for quite some time. My children (11,9,7,4) and I love listening to books on tape especially for long car trips (we live in the boonies) and these are ranked among our favorites! In fact the first time we were listening to them we arrived at the grandparents house and they were actually complaining about getting there before the story ended -it’s a 3 hour drive! Buy them and enjoy you won’t regret it!
Great audiobooks!
My husband and I absolutely LOVE this set of The Chronicles of Narnia audiobooks. The stories are all read by actors who do an amazing job of giving special voices to the characters and who paint pictures of what is happening in the stories by the way they read the books. I can't imagine that I could like a movie rendition, or even an audio dramatized version of these stories more than these audio books that are simply read in their entirety. They're captivating! I really like that you get the REAL story - it hasn't been changed and nothing has been deleted for the sake of filming or making it dramatic. And you still get to use your imagination to create the scenes in your mind. We don't have any children yet, but when we do, we will definitely listen to these with our kids.
Excellent Performances (Unabridged Audio CD)
This review is for the Audio CD production, rather than the stories themselves. While I was a bit surprised to discover I didn't much care for several of the stories, the audio performances were excellent and lent an enjoyability I would never have had if merely reading the books. Great story, poor CD quality
Great story, always loved listening to the wife reading to the children. Thought I would purchase the audiobook to make my drive to work easier. However, the audio on the CDs is very poor. On every CD the narrators voice comes in and goes out forcing you to continuously Adjust the volume. on every CD the narrators voice comes in and goes out forcing you to continuously adjust the volume.
Incredible talent
It's really wonderfull when an audiobook producer goes to the effort of producing an unabridged product. This box set is so great because not only are all of the Chronicles unabridged, each title is read by a different voice talent. Kenneth Branagh, Lynn Redgrave, and Patrick Stewart are only three of the great talents who show up in this series. My only complaint with this CD set is that the individual tracks are too long (4 or 5 tracks for a full CD instead of a standard 19 to 22). This makes skipping forward and backward difficult if your listening is interrupted and you want to hear something you've missed. Other than that - fantastic.
So glad I bought these for our road trips!
We have had this set for awhile now and LOVE it! It is so nice to just pop a CD in the car on long trips and watch my daughter sneak away to Narnia and her own adventure. The reading in this set was done very well, the voices change enough to know which character is talking and the expressions and inflections in the voice really sets the stage. I am so thankful that I bought this set before driving 12 hours for one trip and another 16 for another. This has kept my 6yr old as well as the rest of the family thoughly entertained.
